The issue I saw was that using when the docs for configuring the WiFi hotspot network on Escalarta I was never able to properly setup the WiFi hotspot. In another thread completely not related to this one Lander hypothesized it was because Escalarta was using WLAN1 not WLAN0 as it is in Framebuesa's hostapd.conf. Bottom line is the Framebuesa RPi image provides a properly configured ethernet and WiFi Hotspot interface with no further configuration necessary. If you haven't tried doing this with a PXFMini and RPi3 I'm not sure how you can relate any of your experiences with the EB images?
As noted twice now I've discussed my issue with Lander previously and he has agreed that there are differences in Framebuesa and Escalarta PXFMini images. The "horrible flaw" is an image (Escalarta for PXFMini on RPi3) that doesn't have a functioning network configuration out of the box versus one that does (Framebuesa for PXFMini on RPi3). Any QA tester worth their salt would have picked up on this when doing a basic smoke test of install and configuration.
The impact of this is an image where if a user opts to try and use it they're going to have a horrible experience like I did bouncing around in the documentation for hours on end until I eventually opted to try Framebuesa. Instead of accusing me of not providing information I'd suggest purchasing a PXFMini, a RPi3, and loading the Escalarta image and letting everyone know how you get along.
As requested here is the thread where I highlighted the deficiencies in the Escalarta image for RPi3 and PXFMini based on my experience along with Lander's replies:
