I would like very much to be able to get raw sensor data in python (and be able to send commands to the motors). For the project I'm doing this kind of low level access is critical. I have been trying to use ROS 2, but the basic tutorial doesn't work (http://forum.erlerobotics.com/t/problems-with-ros-2-tutorial/2792/6). Instead (or as well), if I can get the raw sensor data in any way, and send PWM commands (e.g. using https://sourceforge.net/projects/raspberry-gpio-python/) that would be fantastic (I can use a redis server for wifi communication no problem, that is already running).
Any help/pointers would be great! Thanks in advance.

PPS I was wondering MAVProxy can do this for me. The command
python mavproxy.py --master=10.0.0.2:6000 gets it running, I'll look into it more.
